The
Danube Delta is a unique natural reservation of this kind
in Europe acknowledged as such by UNESCO. This youngest
European ground in continuous formation and changing
shelters on a surface of almost 250,000 hectares a
peculiar universe of flora and fauna.
Situated
in the Eastern part of the county, the Danube Delta is
continuously expanding into the Black Sea at a rate of
about 4 meters annually due to numerous alluvia and
organic matters carried and deposited by the river. The
large majority of the delta’s surface is covered by the
water of the Danube’s main three arms- Chilia, Sfantul
Gheorghe and Sulina- and by small canals and ponds. The
rest are sand banks and small dunes which continuously
alter their size and dimensions due to the big river and
winds’ action.
Most
of all, the Danube Delta means an astonishing world of
original vegetation and animals. One may find here the
largest and most compact reed area in the world, a large
variety of water plants and bushes and surprising woods of
broad-lived trees. The delta is also an animal and fish
paradise with over 250 protected species of birds (some of
them considered as natural monuments due to their
uniqueness in the whole world) and small mammals. Fishing
in the delta is free in all seasons, except in April and
May when the fish lay their spawn. In order to protect the
unique fauna, hunting is forbidden all the year round.
Due
to the ever changing landscape it generously offers, due
to the richness of its plants and animals kingdom and,
last but not least, due to the peculiarities of its
inhabitants’ lives, the Danube Delta is a worldwide
known tourist attraction of the greatest importance. Check
below how a tourist can get to the delta and how he/she
could enjoy the delights of a rare world.
